What is Winterjazz?
Winterjazz is a celebrated annual jazz concert series on Prince Edward Island, now in its 17th season. The series features a diverse lineup of talented musicians, offering audiences a rich blend of jazz performances from October to May.

Correct, and sometimes we play the wrong notes. Consider it a brand. In the end, it's all jazz.
Now in its 17th season, the popular concert series has not only brought amazing jazz and blues
acts to PEI but has also given away thousands of dollars in Scholarships to Island students heading off
to
study jazz. Past performers include Jenn Grant, Kim Dunn, Campbell & Johnston, Don Ross, Erin Costelo,
Paul Tynan, Coco Love Alcorn, Ian Sherwood, and Island performers Mike Ross, Joey Kitson, Logan Richard,
and Tara MacLean to name a few. The series offers a supper jazz opportunity, with an early show from
7:00-9:30 PM and a great venue. The Pourhouse offers the perfect fit for the series, as they offer a
great
atmosphere, great food, and a fantastic reputation for live music.
Anchoring the Winterjazz concert series for season 17 is the house band of Deryl Gallant, Ian Toms, Max
Gallant, and filling in for globetrotting Glen Strickey is the amazing Marlee Saulnier. This group has
been busy hosting the Winterjazz series and performing regularly on the Island. Some highlights for the
group include winning both Best Jazz Recording and Achievement in Classical or Jazz at the Music PEI
Awards. They have hosted the Jazz and Blues stage at the ECMA's, and have been nominated for two ECMA's.
The members of this group have been featured on countless recordings, have won dozens of awards in the
music industry, and have performed all over the world with various artists.
The Winterjazz Band
The series is anchored by a house band featuring notable local musicians: bassist Deryl Gallant, saxophonist Glen Strickey, guitarist Ian Toms, and drummer Max Gallant.
Glen Strickey

Glen Strickey is a multifaceted artist based in Prince Edward Island, Canada, known for his work as
a photographer, musician, and educator.
As an award-winning photographer, Glen specializes in landscape, nature, travel, and adventure
photography. His work has been featured in various publications, including Canadian Geographic,
PhotoLife Magazine, and Saltscapes Magazine, where he is a regular contributor.
In addition to photography, Glen is a professional musician.
Deryl Gallant
Bass
2013 - Present
Deryl Gallant has been a prominent figure in Prince Edward Island's music scene for over 30 years.
Beginning his journey in garage bands, he pursued formal education, earning a Classical Degree in
double bass. Gallant co-founded groups like the Jive Kings and The Dennis Lee Project, and has been
involved in numerous Charlottetown Festival productions. His versatility spans various genres, making
him a sought-after bassist for both live performances and studio recordings.
His contributions have been recognized with accolades such as the 2015 Music PEI Musician of the Year
and the 2015 PEI Jazz & Blues Festival Doug Riley Artist awards. Beyond performing, Gallant is
dedicated to nurturing future talent, serving as a bass instructor at the University of Prince Edward
Island and Holland College.
Ian Toms
Guitar
2008 - Present
Ian Toms is a distinguished jazz guitarist from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with a career
spanning over two decades. His musical style draws inspiration from renowned guitarists such as Grant
Green, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, and Lenny Breau, resulting in a smooth and full-bodied sound.
Ian holds a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from McGill University, where he studied and performed
with
prominent Montreal jazz figures, including Joe Sullivan, André White, and Gordon Foote.

Max Gallant
Drums
2023 - Present
Max Gallant, a drummer from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, has significantly contributed to the
island's music scene. In 2020, he joined the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada as
a part-time drum kit instructor, sharing his expertise with aspiring musicians.
In 2023, Max showcased his versatility by performing with saxophonist Ken Fornetran as part of the
Island Jazz series. This collaboration highlighted his adaptability and commitment to enriching the
local jazz community.

The home of Winterjazz has primarily been at The Pourhouse above The Old Triangle. Paul and Jill Mansour have been great to us over the years and always make it a great space to perform in.
